Back pain during pregnancy is common with up to 50% of patients experiencing these pains.
Mechanisms of pregnancy related back pain include but are not limited to: maternal weight gain, biomechanical changes, hormone level changes.
The added weight puts stress on the back, hips, knees and feet/ankles. Additional weight can lead to altered posture and biomechanics as we change the way we sleep, stand, and move during pregnancy.
It is common to believe that back pain is normal and that it will spontaneously resolve following delivery. Unfortunately, because of this, patients may delay care or not seek care at all.
BUT, GOOD NEWS
Studies have shown that manual therapy, including chiropractic, can help decrease pain in pregnancy and labor. Chiropractors can provide safe, effective and drug-free conservative care to relieve pain and improve function during pregnancy and after birth.
